We don’t eat out much as a family. There are several reasons for this:
- Too expensive
- High fat/high salt/high sugar
- Should be a once in a while treat
I was never raised on fast food, neither was my husband. I wanted to give my daughter nutritional meals that I could make at home for a fraction of the cost that it would be to order them as take out.
My homemade pizza for example? Around $8 to make a “large” pizza. Takeout large pizza where I live with all the toppings I use? Easily $30. Savings? $22 minimum. Not including tax or gas to go get it or tip if someone brings it to us in the countryside.
We are human though, and sometimes we order take out. I thought it would be fun to rank some of our take out adventures by viewing it through the perspective of a toddler (ages ranging from 1.5-2.5 in the photos and time frame). Here we go!
Dominos Pepperoni and Cheese Pizza
Toddler approved simplicity? Check. Easy to hold? Check. Cheese is involved? Check. Tasty? Check.
She ate TWO full slices without hesitation and enjoyed every bite. Far from gourmet but a quick junk pizza for a Friday night after work. Price? $6.99 for a medium that fed three of us. Good to go!
Toddler rating: 5/5
A&W Chicken Fingers and Fries
My daughter enjoys chicken fingers/nuggets/dinosaurs whatever. She usually isn’t too picky with those. She wasn’t the biggest fan of these though. She had a few bites, and that was that. She did enjoy the fries though! To be fair, A&W fries are pretty bomb.
Toddler rating: 2.5/5
Chicken Shawarma with Garlic Potatoes
We visited a local shawarma joint and settled in for some delicious grilled shawarma wrap and garlic potatoes with that oh so savory garlic sauce. Personally, I found it delicious. My toddler preferred the slices of pepperoni and bits of grated cheese I had packed as a snack for my doctors appointment this morning. She ate a few potatoes but refused the shawarma.
Toddler rating: 1.5/5
Wendy’s Chicken Nuggets and Fries
My daughter isn’t a big hamburger fan and usually prefers chicken nuggets or strips over sandwiches. She ate 3/4 nuggets without protest, and a handful of fries. She much preferred some of the lettuce from my taco salad that I ordered! The fries were definitely not her favourite though.
Toddler rating: 2.5/5.
This experience was fun! Usually we grab take out if we are on the run and didn’t plan ahead. Generally I try and pack assorted snacks and a basic lunch meal if we’re going to be out over the lunch hour to save money and ensure she eats it, but sometimes things don’t go as planned.
